James Hughes

It is with great sympathy we announce the passing of James Hughes of  Dillon, South Carolina on  October 15, 2020. Please lift the Hughes family in prayer as they grieve the loss of their loved one. Please feel free to sign the guestbook or light a candle. Funeral services will be on October 24, 2020 at 2:00pm, Powerhouse Christian Church 265 Mount Calvary Rd, Dillon, South Carolina. Elder Dean Page, Pastor.  Elder John Graves will be the Eulogist. Burial will be in the Resthaven Cemetary.  Family and friends are asked to please wear a mask and practice social distancing during the entire services including the burial services. While the Hughes family would love to be surrounded by your presence, they acknowledge the health  risks to family, church members, friends, and particularly to those who are most vulnerable to this disease, the elderly and those with chronic health conditions. If you have any symptons related to COVID-19, please do not attend the funeral services. What the family needs most at this time are your prayers and understanding.

Reflections of James Hughes Life

James Edward Hughes “Bopete” was born on October 8, 1959 to the late Elizabeth Clark Hughes and Nathaniel Hughes in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He departed this life on October 15, 2020 at McLeod Medical Center in Florence, South Carolina.

James attended the public schools of Dillon County. He was a hard and dedicated worker at Dillon Yarn Manufacturing Company for over 10 years.

James was ordained Minister James Hughes under the leadership of Apostle Amelia Ann McLean. He later joined The Word Church of Jesus Christ under the leadership of Elder John Graves where he taught Sunday school. 

James also known as “Teacher Hughes” love taking walks uptown white listening to his favorite gospel singer Lee Williams, where he constantly played Lee Williams in his headphones, listening to Cooling Water (his favorite song). He also loved going to church, teaching, preaching and ministering God’s word to whoever he ran into.  It did not matter the place or time. James also was a sports fan, and his favorite teams were the Dallas Cowboys and those Dillon Wildcats. James loved and always talked about his wife and her good cooking, his kids and grandkids. A very humble man who loved God with all his heart.

James leaves to cherish his fond memories: His loving and devoted wife for 30 years, Evangelist Jeanita Hughes; Four daughters: Pamela Hughes, Keshia Brown, Jessica Hughes and Janik’Qua Hughes of Dillon, SC; One son: Jermaine Brown; Five grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Serenity Hughes, Ah’Zieon Brown, Quandarius Owens, Shanaria Hughes and Sa’riyan Hughes; One sister: Margaret Bethea of Lumberton, NC; Three brothers: Nathaniel Hughes and Jimmy Hughes of Dillon, SC and Roy- Lee Hughes(Mary) of Highpoint, NC; Mother-in-law: Juanita Brown of Dillon, SC; Four sisters-in-law: Helen Brown, Wanda Brown, Ester Palmer and Myrtle Bell; Three brothers-in-law: Allen Brown(Gloria), Ronnie Hayes and Travis Brown(Mary); Two special nieces: Shelia Rogers and Lashandra McLeod.

The pain that we feel

Never seems to go away

We wish we could visit Heaven

Only for a day

We know you would hold us

And whisper “Do not think of me as gone away,

Because I am always near”

We know you are in a better place

Where you are at peace and free

To be happy in eternal life

And can still watch over us
